Arthritis
Backache (low back pain)

Arthritis

For a number of years I had been seeking relief for an arthritis condition of my upper spine, cervical and shoulder area. I acquired a pinched nerve in the cervical area and eventually damaged it. As a result, I lost 80 percent use of my entire arm and hand.

I visited Dr. Chan's office in 1981 for a series of six treatments, and immediately I started to improve; my neck and shoulder felt much freer, headaches disappeared, and my arm and hand improved approximately ten percent.

For the first year I received a series of treatments every four months, thereafter every six months. I now have 80 percent use of my left arm.

I must say Dr. Chan is very professional, and the only doctor who has helped my condition.

Low back Pain

Dear Dr. Chan:

This is to outline the problems that I have had with my back and legs, which you have treated.

I am 53 years old and have had some problems with my back since I was approximately 19 years old.

In February 1979, I began to have extreme problems with my back and legs to the extent that I was having difficulty walking. I was treated at this time by the traditional medical profession as follows:

I first contacted my family physician. He, in turn, sent me to an orthopedist.

The orthopedist put me on bed rest and standard back exercises for a period of 10 days. This did not help. I was then referred to a neurosurgeon for examination.

At this point I was admitted to the hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, when I had a myleogram, epidural injections (steroids) and a body scan. A doctor's conference on all these tests produced the unanimous opinion that I should have exploratory surgery on my spine. This surgery was performed, at which time no source of my problem was discovered.

I was then sent home for more bed rest. After approximately 4 months of the above treatment and bed rest, I then sought the help of two different chiropractors. This produced no results, either.

I again contacted the neurosurgeon who had done my exploratory surgery. He suggested, and made arrangements, for an examination by a well-known neurosurgeon at Bowman-Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I was informed by this doctor that I might or might not ever get well.

Approximately five and one-half months have passed and the only way I could get around was either with the assistance of crutches or a cane. At this point, I am still in extreme pain and I am bent out of shape and unable to stand erect.

Though a friend, I had heard of Dr. Chan (who was at this time-1978-at the Washington Acupuncture Clinic on Connecticut Ave), after 1979 moved to Rockville, Maryland at Acupuncture Clinic of Maryland on Rockville Pike.

With all that had transpired and without hope of success, I made arrangements to have acupuncture treatments by Dr. Chan.

He gave me acupuncture treatments twice a day for three successive days. After this series of treatments, he advised me to return for more treatments in one month.

When I returned home, I was still bent and walking with a cane. But in a few days, I began to stand erect and the pains began to subside. I was so pleases that I called Dr. Chan and asked to return in two weeks rather than to wait a month.

I returned in two weeks and had another series of six treatments. In approximately three weeks after the first acupuncture treatments, I was able to return to work.

I have had follow-up treatments in 1981 and again recently for minor back and leg pain. I do this as a preventive measure at the slightest sign of back or leg pain so as not to return to my bad problem of 1978.

Needless to say, I have total faith in acupuncture treatments as Dr. Chan helped me and corrected my problem when there seemed to be no help available. I have talked to many people while in his waiting room and have fund that he has helped many, many people with a great number of problems.

I now lead a normal life and am able to carry on all my normal activities.
